The next morning, Kim woke feeling as though her skull was about to split open. Hammers tapped inside her temples, making her brain ache.

This was Not Good. Kim had a test that day in numbers and keeping books that Kim had to pass.

When the mirror announced that it was an Alberta day, Kim put her/his foot down.

“No,” Kim said, walking directly up to the mirror and staring Alberta in the eye.

Alberta was stubbornly stupid, in Kim’s opinion. And mousey. And she wouldn’t take care of the damned headache but just whine and suffer through it.

The mirror continued to show Alberta with her droopy eyes and skirts that hung down all wrong.

Kim tried to picture Thomas instead. She remembered the last time she’d been Thomas—it had been ages ago. But she still remembered him, still missed him. She called up the voice that had spoken to her the night before, his boy’s voice grown deeper and more commanding.

Alberta began to change. She grew a little taller, not so stooped. And her smile sharpened, grew sly.

The headache in Kim’s head lessened to a dull roaring pain.

It was the best Kim could do that day, she knew. Not quite Thomas, but not the full Alberta, either.

She hadn’t known she could influence the mirror that way before. But since last night, when Thomas had come to help her with Jennifer…that had given Kim a clue.

The others weren’t just there, provided for her by her magical closet. Or maybe, originally, they hadn’t been part of her, but they were there now.

“Thomas,” Kim demanded one more time. Alberta blinked, but didn’t change any more.

Tomorrow, Kim would have to try again.
